Wednesday 14th October 2020 - Jim has shared with fans two of his treasured possessions - his first violin and his first music certificate.
"Hi everybody. When I was a kid my mother asked me if I wanted to learn to play the violin? I did, and my grandmother bought me this violin. It's really tiny as you can see - and I still play it now . Also I found this in the lock-up as well, it's a certificate from the National College of Music in London for my first violin exam. It says from the date on it that I was 12 years and 5 days old. And I received a first class honours pass!"

DEMENTIA CHARITY PRESENTATION
Monday 21st September 2020 - Jim's Dementia Charity Clothes Auction has finished and we now have the total of funds raised. It is impressive and Jim is grateful for everyone's support and contributions.

In the meantime as the Lea household is currently in lockdown, Jim and his wife Lou have had time to now tidy Frank's lock up and have found three smaller personal items that will be auctioned for the charity in the near future. Watch this space for more details in the next few weeks.

STEVE MEGSON SHARES OUTFIT DESIGNS HE CREATED FOR 'SLADE IN FLAME' MOVIE
Saturday 15th August 2020 - Steve Megson, who designed some of the outfits that Jim has been auctioning in his charity clothes sale, has been in touch with Jim's webmaster. Steve and his ex-wife Barbara in 1974 created and designed all the outfits that Slade used in their movie 'Flame'. He still owns all the original draft drawings for the Flame outfits and is pleased to share them with readers of Jim's website. Steve said: "I am attaching some images of designs I did for Jim (and Slade) and also the drawings I did for Richard Longcraine (the Director of 'Slade in Flame) and Chas Chandler to show (via costumes) the development of the band as the Flame story progressed. Obviously these designs included Noddy, Don and Dave too. The final design costumes used on the album cover were made from 3MG material and the images of Flames were projected onto them as they performed. I think that fans might be interested in them, as well as seeing Jim in something a little more adventurous. The blue outfit I designed for Jim was worn on Top Of The Pops (see pic left) but I don't think the yellow one ever got made. I was a great joy to work for Slade during this period." Steve Megson returns to the UK from Malaysia later this year and hopes to be able to display his many drawings and designs at a Slade fan event at some stage. |
JIM CLOTHES AUCTION - WEEK 5
Monday 10th August 2020 - Two more items up for auction from tonight. Lot 9 is Jim's red leather biker jacket - that he used in promo photos and for travelling to gigs in 1981 Lot 10 is Jim's purple polyester/satin jacket he used to promote 'Look Wot You Dun' in 1972 For more details of these auction items click here. |

JIM CLOTHES AUCTION - WEEK 4
Monday 3rd August 2020 8PM - And another two more items up for auction this week. Lot 7 is a silver ring that Jim used in photoshoots and promotion of the 'Everyday' single in 1974 Lot 8 is a light blue waistcoat and trousers combo - created by Steve & Barbara Megson in 1974. The waistcoat had a 'finger' gesture stitched on the front - which manager Chas Chandler didn't consider 'tv friendly'. However, the trousers were later used in the 'Let's Call It Quits' promo video in 1976. For details of these items click here. |
JIM CLOTHES AUCTION - WEEK 3
Monday 26th July 2020 8PM - Two more items up for auction this week. Lot 5 is a black velvet jacket Jim wore in the USA for photoshoots in 1975 Lot 6 is a yellow bomber jacket that was worn on Slade's 'Crazee Nite' UK tour in 1974 and for U.S. gigs the same year. For details of these auction items click here. |
CHARITY AUCTION EXTRA
Thursday 23rd July 2020 - Many thanks to Paul Lythe and Chris Selby who have donated some old Slade Fan Club T-Shirts and a promo copy of Jim's 'Am I The Greatest Now' CD to Jim's charity auction for the benefit of local dementia charity. These items are up for auction now. Bids close on 10th August at 8pm. There is a separate page for these auction items. Click here. |
JIM'S CLOTHES AUCTION - WEEK 2
Monday 20th July 2020 - Many thanks for your generous bids for Lots 1 and 2 - they have now been sold. Lots 3 and 4 are now up to receive auction bids from now (8pm) for the next week. Bids close on Monday 27th July at 8pm. To see the auction page click here. Just so you know.... Lot 4 on offer this week is Jim's waistcoat that was first worn on the 1974 Christmas Top Of The Pops performance of 'Merry Xmas Everybody'. Interestingly Jim has a story about this waistcoat... It was part of an outfit designed and custom made by Steve and Barbara Megson. When Jim 'revealed' it in the dressing room at the BBC TV Centre, Chas Chandler (Slade's manager) was horrified. The waistcoat included the motif of a skull with a knife going through it. He thought it totally inappropriate for younger viewers who might be watching! So the BBC wardrobe department were asked to make a white patch to cover the 'offending' item. (How times have changed). Anyway - this item is on offer this week and still has the patch covering intact - and if the winner un-stitches it the skull will be revealed. Out of interest. From 1972 Steve and Barbara Megson were commissioned to make stage clothes for Slade. Steve Megson knew the band through them being regulars at his father's jazz pub in Bilston called The Trumpet. He used this connection to get the job being clothes designer for the band. Steve and Barbara were responsible for creating Dave Hill's weird and wonderful costumes - but they also created outfits for Nod, Don and Jim. They also designed and made all the band's wardrobe for the movie 'Slade In Flame' - including those incredible suits made of shards of glass that reflected light and images. To see more about Steve Megson's time working for Slade - see his website. Click here. |
'JUST GIVING' PAGE
Thursday 16th July 2020 - Many thanks to website readers Theresa and Di for suggesting opening a 'Just Giving' page - to be run in conjunction with Jim's charity clothes auction. The ladies identified that some of Jim's fans might want to support his dementia charity fundraising - but might not win items in the auction or in actual fact decide not to bid on any. Therefore they asked if we could organise a mechanism whereby they could contribute a donation to the fund anyway? We have therefore opened a 'Just Giving' page today, with a target of £200, so that anyone who wants to make a small donation to Jim's charity choice can help out. All contributions, however small, add up. Jim thanks everyone in advance for their help and support. Once all Jim's clothes have been auctioned we'll publish the total funds raised from the auction and the 'Just Giving' page combined. Thank you! TO VISIT THE 'JUST GIVING' PAGE - CLICK HERE. |
AUCTION UPDATE - JIM'S RED LUREX SUIT
Tuesday 14th July 2020 - The auction is underway and we have so far received a nice number of bids and queries about Lots 1 and 2. Thank you for the support so far. However, we need to advise that Jim has decided NOT to put his famous red lurex suit up for auction. He made the decision yesterday - as in hindsight he considers that he should keep this piece of Slade history for his family. We think that this is the right decision and great for his children and grandkids to hold on to it for future memories. But - we do need to say there are at least two other iconic pieces that Jim has put up for auction that we haven't revealed yet. Watch this space. |
JIM'S CHARITY CLOTHES AUCTION IS LIVE - WEEK 1
Monday 13th July 2020 8pm - Jim's charity clothes auction is live now! Items are being sold to benefit Jim's local dementia charity. We have approximately 20 items - or should we say 'lots' - to be sold. They will randomly be listed on the website over the next few months. We'll probably list a couple of items per week - and bidding on all 'lots' will last for seven days at a time. We have a dedicated page for the website clothes auction - click here. As a preference we would like fans, who have supported Jim and Slade over the years, to win the items - rather than professional buyers. Bids from professional buyers will be excluded. Please note that most items are 45+ years old and are fragile stage wear. They were worn by Jim when he was in his early 20's and VERY skinny. So we would advise that they would not fit / be suitable for most adults in the modern age. Please ensure you read the auction terms and conditions (below) before entering the auction. Happy bidding! |

JIM'S CHARITY STAGE CLOTHES AUCTION STARTS NEXT MONDAY 13th JULY
Monday 6th July 2020 - We're ready to go with Jim's charity clothes auction, which will benefit dementia charity local to Jim. All clothing items have been collected, pressed, and minor repairs carried out. Jim has also signed Certificates of Authenticity for each item. We're excited to share with you the items to be sold that have been stored away for decades in Jim's house and forgotten about. When the clothes were being collected from Jim's house, his grandson happened to call by. He found the kitchen full of brightly coloured, sometimes sequined, outfits... His words were "Not many kids have a grandad with a wardrobe like that"! The auction will start next Monday 13th July - with information published on this website at 8pm (UK time) of the first two items up for auction. We'll have full details and photos of these items next week - but for now we can say that there's going to be one item from 1972 and another from 1975 that will be up for grabs first. |
GETTING PREPARED FOR THE CHARITY CLOTHES AUCTION
Thursday 2nd July 2020 - A couple of minor repairs being made to two items in Jim's charity clothes auction. Some stitching repaired on the sequined arm of Jim's yellow bomber jacket (from Slade's Crazee Nite UK Tour in 1974) and a zip repaired on Jim's distressed leather flying jacket (from the 'Slade in Flame' movie). Almost good to go! News next week. |
JIM'S SUPPORT FOR LOCAL DEMENTIA CHARITY
Monday 29th June 2020 - Following on from Friday's post about Jim's impending stage clothes auction.... Jim today telephoned webmaster to advise that he has decided to support local dementia charity with proceeds from the clothes sale. Dementia charity is close to Jim's heart as his father suffered with dementia - and as has been documented previously - Jim cared for his father for several years before he passed away. So Jim will support dementia charity once more with this clothes auction. Jim's donated clothes have now been inspected by a clothes designer / tailor - and certificates authenticity describing each item have been prepared for Jim to sign. The online auction will commence soon - watch this website for details. |
JIM'S STAGE CLOTHES AUCTION
Friday 26th June 2020 - Jim yesterday recorded the above video for his website from his home in Staffordshire. You will see he is well and comfortable in lockdown!
Jim's clothes auction is now pushing forward - this is with many thanks to his wife Louise.
Lou found numerous suitcases and bags of Jim's stage clothes that had been stored away in brother Frank's lock-up since they moved into their current home (1981). The clothes that had been stored in plastic bags unfortunately had deteriorated over the years and have been discarded because couldn't be repaired. But the clothes in suitcases have survived fairly well. There's an array of jackets, coats, trousers, suits, boots and jewellery to be auctioned all from Jim's time with Slade.
Louise has spent time making minor repairs to the items, ironing and pressing them so they look as good as possible.
Webmaster has now taken then clothes - and the next part of the process is to detail each item - so that Jim can sign 'Certificates of Authenticity' for each one. We will then get some detailed photos taken and the auction process will commence.
Jim is keen that the auction process should:
1) Generate funds for his chosen charity / charities (to be determined)
2) Try to ensure that all the clothes end up with fans who have been so supportive of him and Slade over the years (rather than to memorabilia bidders who will purchase them just to sell on).
Therefore a bidding process will be arranged whereby the bidder will have to detail not only their bid, but give reasons why they want to own the item, and say what it will mean to them to own it, etc. Jim and Frank will review the bids and decide who should win the item. It will not necessarily be the highest bidder - but it will be the fan who they consider most worthy to own it. (More detail in due course).
Jim wants the auction to be fairly low key - and just for the fans. Details of it will only appear on his website only. So watch this space as things move forward. Items will be auctioned on an ad hoc basis - maybe a couple of items at a time , over a period of months.
Just to mention that Jim intended recording a musical piece for the website yesterday on his piano - but unfortunately he has sprained his wrist and couldn't play. We will try and see if we can arrange another attempt at a 'performance' in the future.

Wednesday 1st April 2020 - Today is Jim's wife Louise's birthday - she's 70 years young. Normally a birthday in the Lea family would spark a big family celebration. They plan to have a quiet day with a meal together later, including a cake, with one solitary romantic candle on! Jim wishes all readers of the website well - and asks them to stay safe, stay at home and look after themselves. He'll catch up with everyone later in the year! Monday 2nd March 2020 - Jim was shocked to hear of Don Powell's stroke on Saturday in Denmark and sends this message to him: "Hi Don - It was terrible to hear of your stroke. A real body blow!! Although the band finished many moons ago, we were like brothers during that 25 years together. You were and still are the quickest wit in the band. You kept us laughing through the ups and downs of those years. I'm sure that everyone who's met you thinks the same. Keep smiling Don and get through this. Get well soon. Jim." |
JIM FEATURES ON PAUL WELLER'S NEW ALBUM 'ON SUNSET'
Sunday 1st March 2020 - Last Summer Jim was flattered to be contacted by Paul Weller - asking him if he would possibly play violin on one of the tracks he was recording for his new album. He told Jim it was for a certain track where he wanted to have violin in the vein of 'Coz I Luv You' - and he instantly thought of Jim to record it. Jim obliged by recording the violin piece at his local studio - The Mad Hat Studios in Coven, Wolverhampton. It has been confirmed that the said track 'Equanimity' will feature on Weller's album 'On Sunset' to be released on 12 June. In the online magazine 'Front View' Paul talks about the track: 'Equanimity' "A cheeky little number" says Weller "a bit Berlin Cabaret, a bit Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band" featuring a swinging violin solo from Slade's Jim Lea in the style of 'Coz I Luv You'. "I loved Slade's singles" says Weller. "They were a real lad's band - skinheads and suedeheads alike mainly listened to black music, but Slade were one of the few pop groups we loved". |
JIM TO ANNOUNCE BIOGRAPHY DVD PROJECT ON KEN BRUCE SHOW
Friday 28th February 2020 - Jim's long awaited appearance on Ken Bruce's 'Tracks Of My Years' feature will finally get aired next week. From Monday 2nd March to Friday 6th March Jim will choose, discuss and play two songs per day that have shaped his life. Ken Bruce's show is broadcast between 9.30am and midday each week day on Radio Two. Fans need to listen in as an announcement will be made about the project Jim has been working on for the last few years, that has been very close to his heart... However, as website readers we will exclusively tell you now... Jim has been making a biography DVD that will be released this year, hopefully before Summer. The working title is currently: 'The Story Of Jim Lea and Slade'. Fans have constantly asked Jim to write a biography - but he has decided to do better than that. He tells the story of him and Slade on a DVD. Jim asked friends to be recorded to help him tell the story - and these friends included Paul Weller, Francis Rossi, Roy Wood, Karl Wallinger of World Party, Mick Fleetwood and Don Powell - to name a few. Jim was particularly grateful to Don who flew over to the UK from Denmark to help with the project. Dave Meehan is Director of the DVD with Frank Lea as Executive Producer. More details to follow over the next few months. |
UPDATE ON JIM'S STOLEN FENDER STRATOCASTER HH CONTEMPORARY
Tuesday 18th February 2020 - Two weeks ago we advised that Jim's prized Fender Stratocaster was stolen from Central London. We put out the word for fans to share the details of the theft on social media in a bid to try and get it recovered.
Unfortunately the guitar has still not been returned or found. We do not have the serial number to pass on to fans - and to date we have only shared photos of the guitar on social media in a hope that fans might see it and recognise it.
However today Jim has released this, previously unseen studio footage, for fans to see. It shows close ups of the famous guitar and we hope this will help fans recognise it.
Once more we ask that fans look out for the Stratocaster in music shops, or on internet websites such as Gumtree and eBay. A reward is offered. Please email website on [email protected] with any info if you find it's whereabouts.
We have made the video downloadable. Please share on social media.

JIM'S FENDER STRATOCASTER HH CONTEMPORARY STOLEN
Monday 3rd February 2020 - We need to report that Jim's Fender Stratocaster HH Contemporary was stolen in Central London on Friday 31st January. It is Jim's much loved guitar that he used at his Robin performances in Bilston in 2002 and 2017 (see pictures to the right and below). He asks that (particularly) London fans look out for it as the thief might be trying to sell it in London guitar shops, or on Gumtree or Ebay etc. If posted on 'sale' websites it would only have been posted for sale on Friday or afterwards. Reward offered. Please email website on [email protected] with any info. We'll publish more details on website when we can. |

JIM TO CLEAR OUT HIS CLOSET IN 2020
Tuesday 10 December 2019 - Jim is typically a hoarder. He has kept some of his famous stage-gear from the 70's and 80's, and has also kept other clothes that he wore, and was pictured in, during 'the era'. He has now decided to clean out his closet. Jim and his wife Lou have got together several (if not numerous) pieces that he wants to pass on - and he has decided that the items should go to fans who can keep them as memorabilia of a golden age. The items will be sold via this website and Jim's charities will benefit from the sale. We have no further details of the items being sold yet, or how we will do this. But keep watching the website - as we will make an announcement early in the New Year as to how this will all be happening. |

A. There are only a very few copies of the CD single available (75). None are being given away free. We wanted to make sure that they ALL go to real fans. If they were sold online they might get into the hands of dealers who would be buying them to sell on to make a profit. Therefore, by selling them at a Convention we know that all the copies will have at least started off in the hands of true fans.
Q. Where can I get a ticket for the Slade Fans Convention in Wolves Saturday 19th October?

LIMITED COPIES RARE REMIX VERSION OF 'AM I THE GREATEST NOW?'
Thursday 10th October 2019 - A special rare remixed copy of Jim's next single will be available to pre-order purchase by 75 lucky fans at next weekend's Slade Fans Convention 2019 in the Slade Rooms in Wolverhampton.... Here's some information about how this has come about...
As you may recall Jim's manager Frank recently announced that he has employed a radio plugger to assist getting Jim radio play for his next single. The plugger went through Jim's catalogue and he stated he really wanted to give a remastered version of 'Am I The Greatest Now?' another go. He thought that with the current radio climate, and the time of year, that this track stood the best chance of getting radio play now.
Well 75 copies of the re-mixed single have been pressed as promotional copies for radio stations - and were due to be distributed. However - it has just come to light that the wrong remix master was sent to the CD pressers!
The question has been what to do with these incorrect CD's? It has been decided by Frank that in order to recoup the pressing costs, and also provide some funds for his chosen charity of motor neurone disease, that fans should be given the opportunity to purchase them. They will be a collectors item.
Only 75 copies exist. No more copies will be pressed. These CDs will be available to pre-order by 75 lucky fans who attend the convention event on Saturday 19th October. What will happen is that a draw will be made and the holders of 75 lucky entry tickets will be invited to purchase the CD. (Every entry ticket has a number on it - and 75 numbers will be drawn at random)... So as not to distract from the general promotion of the new release - the rare remix CDs will not be posted out to fans until around 22 November... More details will follow in the next few days as to how this sale will be managed... Watch this space.

A CHANGE OF PLAN REGARDING JIM'S NEXT SINGLE
Thursday 26th September 2019 - Jim today has announced that there will be a change of plan regarding the next single release. Jim's manager. Frank Lea, has recruited a radio plugger to assist in getting Jim radio play for his next single. The plugger has been through Jim's catalogue and he really wants to give a remastered version of 'Am I The Greatest Now?' another go. He thinks that with the current radio climate, and the time of year, that this track stands the best chance of getting radio play now. The new remastered version of the song will be released on Wienerworld in late October. Both Jim and Frank are disappointed that fans will not hear the new track 'There's A Hole in My Soul' just yet. However they are being guided by the advice of the plugger... But fear not, the good news is that 'There's A Hole In My Soul' will follow at the start of next year. More info to follow in due course. |
JIM’S NEW SONG IS GOING TO BE: ‘THERE’S A HOLE IN MY SOUL’ - WE HAVE A WINNER!
Friday 12th July 2019 - Pleased to announce that we have a winner in the song-title competition. The winner is Steve Lloyd from Wednesbury, UK – who was the first person who correctly guessed the correct title of the song. The title is going to be…. ‘THERE’S A HOLE IN MY SOUL’ Steve posted his guess at 12.34 on Friday 28 June on the Slade Are For Life…. Facebook page. There were some great entries – but Steve was the first entrant to post with the exact correct answer. Jim is currently busy in the studio and we will arrange for him to buy Steve the promised beer in the near future… Steve – we will contact you tomorrow via Facebook. Congratulations! Look forward to having that beer! Fans - Look forward to hearing Jim's new release this Autumn! |
A CHANCE TO WIN A ONE-TO-ONE MEETING WITH JIM AND HAVE HIM BUY YOU A BEER!
We are pleased to announce a fantastic competition, where the prize for the first person who gets the correct answer, is a one-to-one meeting with Jim – and for Jim to buy the beers! Jim has been busy in the studio for most of the year and he now has a new single due for release this Autumn. The competition relates to the title of Jim’s new single. The competition is tough – very tough. And we’re not actually sure if anyone will be able to work out the correct answer and win it… But here we go. Jim’s next single has SIX words in the title. The first letters of each of the six words (in order) are T - A - H – I – M – S. What we are asking fans to do – is to try to work out what the actual title is? All six words have to be correct. The competition starts NOW (Friday 27 June) at midday. It closes in two weeks time on Friday 12 July at midday. How do you enter? You can enter via links that you will find on the Slade Are For Life – Not Just For Christmas Facebook page or via the Slade Forum (www.sladeforum.co.uk) – please note that you do not have to be a member of the Slade Forum to post your entry there. Simply find the link – post your entry as a comment - which should be your suggested six words making up the title of the new single. Nothing more is needed. Multiple entries are allowed. The winner of the competition will be the FIRST person to work out the correct song title and post it as a comment on either the SAFL-NJFC Facebook page OR the Slade Forum. We will then work out with the winner a suitable time and place for Jim to buy them that beer… Location would typically have to be either in Wolverhampton or London – and the winner would have to get themselves there… If we get a winner – it will be announced on Jim’s website together with the SAFL Facebook page and the Slade Forum soon after the closing time for the competition. SO GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ENTERING – WE WILL HOPEFULLY ANNOUNCE THE WINNER’S NAME IN TWO WEEKS TIME…. THE SAME TIME YOU WILL BE FINDING OUT THE EXACT TITLE OF JIM’S NEW SINGLE! |
NEW SINGLE ALERT
Thursday 27 June 2019 - We have a title for Jim's next single - which is to be released this Autumn. Before we announce the title we will be running a fantastic competition whereby the winner will be invited to a one-to-one meeting with Jim - and Jim will buy the beers (other soft drink options available)! The competition will be tough - very tough. We're actually not sure anyone will get the correct answer... But if somebody does, the prize will be this personal meeting with Jim - which would be either in Wolverhampton or London. All we can say at the moment is the competition will relate to Jim's new single. All will be explained on this website tomorrow (Friday 28 June) at midday. Fans will have two weeks to enter. Watch this space tomorrow. |

KEITH ENGLISH EXPLAINS WHY HE CHOSE 'HOW DOES IT FEEL' FOR THE SOUNDTRACK TO HIS NEW MOVIE
Sunday 29th July - Keith English, Director of the new movie 'The More You Ignore Me', has explained to the website why he chose Jim's 'How Does It Feel' to be included in the soundtrack: "I grew up with Slade in the 1970s and ‘How Does it Feel?’ is my favourite of all the songs Jim wrote for the band. So it was a no-brainer that when I came to direct ‘The More You Ignore Me ‘ from Jo Brand’s fabulous script, it had to be the opening title music. It sets the mood for the first half of this wonderful, heartwarming but uncompromising, tale of a young girl (actor Ella Hunt) growing up in the 1970s and 80s with a mother (Sheridan Smith) suffering from schizophrenia. 'How does it Feel?’ reflects not only the young girl's worries about her future, but also her mother’s ‘mental wanderings’ perfectly. The story could easily be a companion piece to the ‘Slade in Flame’ as they both have as their theme the struggle to rise above the mundane and make one’s life something special. In the case SIF it's Don’s character reaching for stardom, in TMYIM it's the young Alice’s fight to be something more than the daughter of ‘a mental woman’. Genesius Producer Debbie Gray was the driving force behind the project. She, Jo Brand and I developed the film from Jo’s novel over 5 years. TMYIM is, in turns, laugh-out-loud funny and deeply emotional (as drama comedies from BAFTA award-winning Jo Brand often are) and the story is contained within ‘How Does It Feel?’ as the opening title song and ‘City’s End’ (sung by Sheridan Smith herself) over the closing credits. 'City’s End' is, again, a wonderful companion piece to ‘How Does It Feel?’. Written by the late Brian Glancy, who collaborated with many of the bands coming out of Manchester in the 1990s, it is a song reflecting over opportunities missed and and a life passed by. It is the Ying to ‘How Does It Feel’s Yang. Guy Garvey (Elbow) and Pete Jobson (I am Kloot) - who did the soundtrack score for TMYIM . To conclude, an independent British movie is so hard to get off the ground (as the boys from Slade will know!) and Debbie, Jo and I are so honoured to have the opportunity to have HDIF as part of our story. I hope you guys go out an support it in any way you can . Thanks Jim, Noddy, Don & Dave. I hope we did you proud." The film is currently showing in many big cities, but will continue opening in various places at various time all summer - so, if you fancy seeing the movie (and hearing 'How Does It Feel' on the big screen again) please check the website www.themoreyouignoreme.co.uk Keep a look out to see if your area gets added to the schedule which will run until the end of September. To see the behind the scenes promo for the movie click here. |
'HOW DOES IT FEEL' FEATURES IN NEW BRITISH MOVIE
Saturday 28th July - Jim has been quoted recently as saying that 'How Does It Feel' was the first song that he ever wrote at age 14 - and he considers to be his best ever song - so it was all downhill after that! We are pleased to advise that film director Keith English features the classic track in his new British movie 'The More You Ignore Me' that is showing in selected cinemas in major UK cities next week. Some might say I have unwittingly written about myself!” The 'Lost In Space' single (radio edit) can be downloaded from 18 May. CHRISTMAS 2017 MESSAGE FROM JIM - HIS THOUGHTS ON THE 'FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY' DVD SHOWING AT THE ROBIN...
"Firstly, thanks to everyone who came to the Robin 2 for the Jim Jam DVD launch. £6,300 was raised for charity which is commendable, so thank you all for attending.
Since November 5th I’ve been trying to get a handle on what was going on that afternoon. It had a real and unreal feel to it. Something that could not be explained easily. I suppose it was surreal.
I was told that at 7.30am a bunch of revellers were outside the Robin 2 kicking up an unholy row. They were dispersed by Mike Hamblett the club boss as the neighbours Sunday lie in was being disturbed.
I suspected that it was going to be lively in the hall, but I was told in the dressing room that the audience had shown supreme concentration during the screening with not a rowdy soul in sight.
After the break Paul Cookson took the stage as I waited to go on, but I was taken by surprise by his stage presence. He was not only a good poet, but he was a seasoned and confident performer of his work. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed his contribution to this unique afternoon. All concerned thought he was wonderful.
While I was waiting to go on for the Q&A, Franxy announced that I was coming on and the crowd welcomed me like a Roman Emperor returning from a victorious battle - thus prompting me to say to the audience “Friends, Romans, Countrymen. Lend me your money!”
On sitting down, I noticed how attentive the audience had become. A university lecture vibe was present. I had no idea what questions were coming my way, but I tried to be as candid as possible. While answering, my troublesome brain kept coming up with many related and unrelated events which is quite the norm for me to be bombarded by brainstorming thus David Bowie cropped up in the ‘Everyday’ answer even though I didn’t know I was going to verbalise that story. Never the less it raised a laugh.
I enjoyed the Q&A, but I was always aware of the palpable calm concentration of the audience.
My brother Frank wanted me to play at the end of the afternoon's programme, so at the eleventh hour I came up with the karaoke idea. It was nothing like playing with a band but as it wasn’t meant to be a gig it sufficed.
After speaking to Franxy, and others who were present, the buzz word was EMOTIONAL. Mike Hamblett described it as magical. As far as I’m concerned there was something present that was bigger than it's parts.
None of this could have happened if Mark Smith had not come up with the ‘Jim Jam’ footage which had magic in it too. All in all, an unusual and unforgettable event which was incomparable by any standards.
Thanks again for turning up. After all it was you guys who created the atmosphere.
Have a great Christmas, ROCK ON! "

Review by Richard Cox: Jim Lea – a day of love and loud Slade rock
I didn’t go to be entertained; I went to re-connect with a guy I’d known well when we were in our heady 20s. I left touched by genius; by bravery; by the emotion that makes men and women weep; by the thunderous crash, squeal, moan and pound of a guitar wielded by a man who has music in every pore of his wearied body. Jim Lea, musical genius, thank you.
The afternoon in Bilston’s Robin 2 – a venue redolent of 70’s sticky carpets, but now, thankfully, without the lingering fag ash and smoke – was one of those events that ended, not in a stunned silence, but in the gabbling incoherency of people struggling to come to terms with the dream-like reality they’d experienced.
Chronologically it was: a tight-pressed queue for at least two hours; a cathartic, loud DVD that lifted the rafters; a few poems; a question and answer session that de-bunked some of the myths of Slade; and then raw, wonderful music. I should stops there; the memories we hundreds savour will live forever – but I won’t.
The DVD was a masterpiece of hand-held 2002 footage from Mark Smith, with input from Dave Kemp and Nomis Baurley (three, very long term Slade fans) from Jim’s only gig since the end of Slade in 1994. It was raw: there was some gristle, a little bit of fat, but mostly red-running meat – yes, that raw.
Paul Cookson, the poet laureate of Slade, read from his anthology, Touched By The Band Of Nod, and a new poem, penned for this one-off, never to be repeated, occasion.
The lights dimmed and the star of the show, looking a lot fitter for his 68-year, rock ‘n roll career, stepped onto the stage and took his wicker armchair seat next to BBC WM’s Paul Franks.
I could get personal – everybody in that packed auditorium has a personal story of Slade and Jim Lea – and it was wonderful to hear of his love for ‘our’ heroes, including The Beatles and Hendrix, but let’s stick to Jim’s words. Most music fans know about Jim Lea and his musical leadership of Slade – Britain’s biggest band of the 70s – but rumours and stories have mushroomed since the band ‘had run its course as the original foursome’ in 1994. Jim deftly laid out the truth.
Manager Chas Chandler was a big man and teenager Jim was in awe. Nobody disagreed with the near seven-foot-tall giant, and when he told the band they had to write their own songs, the four buckled down. We know that the original pairings for this were Nod and Dave, and Jim and Don, and it worked well (Jim and Don co-wrote Dapple Rose and Look Wot You Dun), but gradually Jim, the youngest member of the band, took over and would take his rough work to Nod so they could work together.
But Slade were not the only writers. Everyday – a melancholy almost ballad beginning – was born when Jim and his wife Louise (they married in 1973 at the height of Slade’s early fame and have been together ever since ... very rock ‘n roll!) were having a dinner party. Jim announced that everybody had a song in them, but Louise refused to perform her idea in front of the others. She and Jim went into a separate room and Louise sang: “Everyday, when I’m away, I’m thinking of you”. Now you can understand why such a personal lyric should be between just two people. So does Louise deserve a credit along with husband Jim and Noddy? Yeah, of course.
Most of Jim’s writing took place in a confined space; mostly the toilet! Sometimes the shower! Merry Christmas Everybody, perhaps the best known Slade song and heard by billions worldwide, was down to Jim’s ferocious talent, and the late Chas Chandler’s powerful influence. It was September 1973; it was 90 degrees Fahrenheit in New York; Chas has found out that John Lennon is not using the studio; and Chas wanted a Christmas Number One! The result was that Jim Lea went for a shower and the Slade Christmas song was born within minutes – and none of the band liked it! For some people, success comes stumbling through the door like a drunk; for Jim Lea it is a natural talent that he has nurtured ever since he picked up a toy guitar. Jim’s daughter told him he was autistic. If that’s true, then Jim Lea is a classic savant, with musical ability as his speciality, but he just seems too well-rounded and what an incredible communicator!
There was more, much more, and Jim was in his reminiscent stride until he suddenly leapt to his feet and walked off. Something was happening, but what?
In 2014 Jim was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had been undergoing treatment ever since. The treatment is tiring; it affects his physical strength; and he’ll never sing again like he did. We all knew this ... so who was this smiling doppelganger with a black six-string hanging round his neck re-emerging from back stage? That sell-out audience rose as one, cheered as one, clapped like the rat-a-tat of a machine gun, and swooned like the teenagers they used to be.
Cum On Feel The Noize bounced out of the stage. Jim’s guitar reverberated and, after saying he’d need help with vocals, hundreds of voices tried, and failed, to drown his voice. Gudbuy T’ Jane followed, with that driving, resounding beat stripping away the years. That was it; two tracks from a man not in the best of health was surely enough? No. I was taken back to the early 70s; those days of screaming, seat-wetting young girls – and lads – crammed into bulging venues all over the world. We’ll Bring The House Down burst out of the stage and it very nearly did as that audience waved and screamed, shouted and adored their star.
Jim was no longer a pensioner claiming his weekly pay from the Post Office. This was a youngster with a grin that would have swallowed Bilston and eyes so much brighter than any firework on the day. November 5, Bonfire Night 2017, will last forever. Nothing was going to stop James Whild Lea from a final offering, and Mama Weer All Crazee Now took away the last struggling vestiges of middle and old-aged decorum. This was no blast from the past; this was the past being resurrected for the chosen few in the Robin 2.
It was an afternoon of love. Love for the man and his music, and love for each other. It was also love between the original members of Slade. Conjecture, downright lies, and rumours have resonated round the ‘feud’ between the guys: so here was Jim Lea praising Noddy Holder for his work on songs and music, declaring the way he worked happily alongside Dave Hill, and his deep affection for Don Powell. They’ll never play together again as a band, ever, so let’s just be thankful for the music they gave us back then.
The ‘Slade family’ of fans is a wonder to behold. Almost all are middle-aged, some a lot later (with the exception of a ferociously dedicated young lady school teacher and a few others); most of us have taken life’s battering; but standing in a cold queue for most of a Sunday morning, became a joyous reunion. We were not disappointed by the legendary bassman, violinist, lead guitarist, vocalist and phenomenal songwriter that is Jim Lea.
It was a day that will be savoured and remembered. When Slade fans get together we reminisce, and that afternoon in Bilston will live on in our

Why the Robin 2 venue? : Jim was keen to return to the venue where he performed his only ever solo gig
+++ Profits from the event will go to Jim's cancer charity +++
How the DVD came about:
Jim's only professional solo gig took place at The Robin 2 in Bilston on 16 November 2002. The gig was called 'Jim Jam'.
The gig was recorded for sound only - it was not professionally filmed.
Since the event Jim has been on the look-out for good quality footage filmed by fans. However none of the footage he found was of good enough standard. However, earlier this year fan Mark Smith from Mansfield gave Jim his good quality footage.
Mark says: "I sneaked my top of the range camcorder (Panasonic MX5) into the gig - got a great position - and filmed most of it. After the event I probably played my recording back around six times. I realised my filming was good. I actually thought to myself 'I'm going to hold on to this and save it in case a special project comes along". I therefore resisted uploading any of the footage to YouTube or social media - and I never actually showed it to anybody apart from myself. Then when I heard on the grapevine that Jim was looking for quality 'JimJam' footage I took the opportunity to get my tape to him - via his brother Frank.
After Jim played the video footage to his wife Louise and daughter Bonnie, and saw their positive reaction to the footage, Jim decided to release it on DVD. The DVD will include Jim's commentary on how the 'JimJam' event came about, his memories of the day and the reasons why he chose to play certain songs. The DVD is very much a souvenir of Jim's only ever live gig - and is very much for the fans.

SOME INFORMATION ON JIM'S NEXT SINGLE...
Where was the single recorded? "The single was recorded at Mad Hat studio in Wolverhampton - a local place". When did you write it? "I wrote it some time ago but the track was never completed, so I finished it recently when I needed more material. Frank (Lea) was always keen on it so he prompted my memory about it". What is it about? "It is about a scenario where a man and wife have an argument that resulted in a violent altercation. The husband was full of various substances and went over the top. He awoke the next day to discover that he was in trouble with not only his wife but also the police. He apologised profusely and not until a long time later did his wife forgive him". When will the single be ready / released? "I am mastering the finished single in London today (Tuesday 20th June). We will then need to arrange an appropriate release date - Frank says that this shouldn't be too far away". JIM LEA ACOUSTIC GUITAR
Several fans have emailed Jim's website with questions - one particular question caught Jim's attention... Fan Peter Everitt emailed asking for information on the acoustic guitar used in recently publicity pics. He said "I'm a huge fan and hope you can help. Silly question really, but it's been bugging me ever since I saw the photos of Jim with the acoustic guitar. Can you ask him what brand / make that guitar is as I can't find anything online?" Jim responded on 19th June: "Hi Peter. It may be laughable but this is not a make of guitar it is in fact a cheap child's guitar (that is decades old). It has rarely been in tune..... it’s impossible to tune! It was bought for my wife Lou by her parents for her birthday. When I started seeing her I would play it in her house. Believe it or not Lou used to sing and play guitar in a folk band called The Aztecs. When she stopped playing with them she played as a duo with a guy who played guitar also playing folk based material. Lou stopped playing when I started going to her house because she didn’t think she could be as good as me which was a shame! As time went on I asked if I could borrow the guitar and take it home with me as I couldn’t afford a guitar of my own. Around this time I began to write songs so I never gave it back to Lou. Most of the famous Slade songs were written on this awful cheap guitar." |
